The Sri Maha Bodhi is a highly venerated and respected tree not just in Anuradhapura, but the entire island, primarily by Buddhists as it has particular significant to the religion; it’s under this tree that Lord Buddha attained enlightenment. It’s a part of the Bodhgaya in India, and the cutting was brought to Sri Lanka it’s believed, by Princess Sangamitta. Today the location is visited by devotees and pilgrims, and is especially busy on Poya Days.
