As a pre-dominantly Buddhist nation, Sri Lanka has a multitude of temples, statues and monasteries all over the island, some more secluded and hidden than others, yet all intriguing and awe-inspiring in their own right. The Pidurangala Ancient Forest Monastery is one example, and a must-visit during your trip to Sigiriya. Spanning across 13 acres, this monastery is testament to King Kassapa’s devoutness, as it’s said he often came here to engage in religious activities. Previously inhabited by monks, the monastery has been recently restored, and is also home to a 48ft long statue of the reclining Buddha, supposedly one of Asia’s oldest.
